Sydney Fish Markets… I’m not a fan!

I got talked into going to Pyrmont for lunch (a lazy 5 minute walk from the house).  A couple of girlfriends from uni wanted to go so it was more about the company than the food.

Now, on a Saturday, it’s throbbing with people which, in itself, produces a certain ambience BUT!

I’m always disappointed with the cooked seafood (I’m perfectly happy to buy raw from there and cook at home) and the ambience starts to wear a bit thin when you have to dive through a crowd to leap on a dirty table that a family is vacating only to find the next set of occupants already seated.

Anyway, today, we had a grilled seafood platter and some sashimi to share and went to sit outside.  We fought off the flock of feral seagulls gamely until the downpour drove us (and everyone else sitting outside) inside.

Now, call me a snob but I can’t see the appeal in paying $25 a head to stand around in a crowded smelly market area and have a few mouthfuls of cold octopus, fish and soggy chips.  There’s a nice fish shop not far from home that charges about $12 for a nice plate of mixed grilled seafood and the quality is, secondo me, far superior.

Oh well, I’m probably missing the point of it all.
